Here are 15 attributes I love that all my favorite players possess:I love players who:1. Fight for groundballs.2. Hustle to the end line after a shot. 3. Sprint back on defense.4. Communicate with their teammates.5. Stay locked in when on the sideline. 6. Hustle after loose balls.7. Play tough, full field defense.8. Understand their strengths & weaknesses.9. Make the extra pass.10. Don't waste their dodge.11. Aren't afraid to drive to the goal.12. Closeout & breakdown on defense.13. Don't commit silly penalties.14. Encourage their teammates15. Exhibit sportsmanship from the first to last whistle. What you need to notice about the list above is that all 15 points are the player's responsibility. Any players can possess these. So what's the coach's responsibility?? To help their players (who hopefully display the above attributes) by teaching them life lessons while developing their abilities on lacrosse field, be it in practice or games. ... See MoreSee Less

Here are 5 practice mistakes I see far too many coaches making:Mistake #1 - Not taking the time to plan your practices. There's nothing more important than sitting down the night before your team's practice & figuring out what your team should be working on. This will force you to think back & evaluate previous games & practices instead of turning up & running any drill that comes to mind.PRO TIP: Have someone film your practices and/or games, especially your team games. Film study is part of seeing what worked & didn't work & on what areas your team needs to focus on going into the next week of practice. Mistake #2 - Spending too long on specific drills.Another thing I notice is coaches spending far too long on certain drills waiting until their team runs it perfectly. Completing drills perfectly isn't, nor should it be the goal & wastes far too much practice time. You shouldn't be spending more than 8-10 minutes on each drill.PRO TIP: Make sure your practice plan makes use of the most time you are allotted for a practice. A great way to do this is run various stations that focus on different skills for a majority of practice. This helps your players stay focused, increase intensity & you disguise your conditioning. Mistake #3 - Not running enough small-sided games. There's nothing that will benefit players more than practicing their skills in competitive games against other players. But playing 10-on-10 (which most coaches do), means that players aren't getting enough touches, shots & chances to attack. Small-sided games are the way to go!PRO TIP: With a larger roster & with lacrosse a game of substitutions, split your rosters up into smaller 3v3, 4v4 or 5v5 squads to maximize the amount of reps they get in practice. Doing this keeps players engaged, rather than just standing around watching.Mistake #4 - Spending too much time on team strategy.Ever walked into a practice & watched the team practicing their set plays for 30-45-minutes?? I have far too often. And those coaches who are doing this are stealing far too much skill development time from their players.PRO TIP: Set your practices up where from beginning to end, where the drills flow & increase to the point of team strategy, while focusing on individual skills in the process. Mistake #5 - Running boring, non-effective lacrosse drills or worse, drills that don't fit the age group you're coaching. Bad news: There are A TON of lacrosse drills I see coaches using on a daily basis that simply don't work. The good news?? We want to help you out. We are gauging interest on coaching symposiums where we cover different facets of the game to include: offense, defense, faceoffs, transitions, effective substitutions, practice planning, etc. If you're a coach looking to take that next step, comment below & let us know some things you would like to see us offer for coaches. Your feedback will help us to plan & offer more. ... See MoreSee Less
